Chapter One: Shattered Glass

   I stared into the mirror, hating the girl in the ill-fitted, designer gown Vivian had picked out for me. The silk was a shade too pale for my skin tone, making me look like a ghost. She'd forced me into it, insisting I had to "look presentable" for the Ricci gala. The dress was the only decent thing in my closet – a hand-me-down from Vivian's daughter (her real daughter, not me). I'd tried to alter it, but Vivian had snatched it away, saying I'd "ruin it". Now it hung off my frame like a poorly wrapped package, the hem dragging on the floor and the sleeves swallowing my hands.
